Route To Becoming A Trainee Solicitor In England And Wales
In England and Wales, before a trainee can begin the professional training program, the trainee has to have an undergraduate degree. This degree can be either in law or another subject, but if the degree is not in law, the trainee will have to take a conversion course and then take the Legal Practice Course. The two options for the conversion courses are the Graduate Diploma in Law or the Common Professional Examination. While the trainee is under the training contract, they are expected to get practical experience in three different areas of law at a minimum. Once they have successfully completed the training contract, they will be considered qualified and can receive admittance as a solicitor. Training contracts and trainee solicitors were once referred to as articled clerkship and articled clerks, respectively. Route To Becoming A Trainee Solicitor In Scotland
The path to becoming a trainee solicitor in Scotland is very similar to the path in England and Wales. To become a trainee solicitor, the trainee has to complete the Law Society of Scotland examinations or have an undergraduate degree in law before they take a one-year Diploma in Legal Practice. After completing these prerequisites, the trainee will be able to get an Entrance Certificate and become a trainee. Traineeships are acquired by applying for the ones advertised in the open job market. It is important to note that traineeships are not guaranteed so graduates cannot expect to secure one. In fact over the past decade, over 20% of Diploma graduates were not able to begin traineeships. All trainees have to complete a minimum of 60 hours for Trainee Continuing Professional Development. After a year, the trainee will then be able to be granted admission as a solicitor, and they will be allowed to appear in court. |
